Hawaii Hurricane Insurance Discounts for Wind Mitigation.

Nearly every hurricane insurance carrier in Hawaii offers premium discounts — sometimes called "premium credits" or "wind mitigation discounts" — to homeowners who retrofit their homes with hurricane clips and other wind-resistive devices. The discount is real, it applies for as long as you own the home, and for most Oahu homeowners it pays back the cost of the retrofit within a few years.
NOTE TO SITE VISITORS FROM

Gerry Peters, Original Engineered Retrofit
Hurricane Protection Founder

This is Gerry Peters, Hawaii Hurricane Ready (HHR Sales, Inc.) founder. I pioneered the field and widespread availability of Engineered Retrofit Hurricane Protection 30.5 years ago right after Hurricane Iniki.

To get engineering mandated strength and insurance claim protection, these installations are very technically specialized. Hawaii Hurricane Ready with Kore Construction LLC is the only full-time Licensed engineering experienced  General Contractor with a combination of three decades experience and over 630,000 best quality, strongest, most weatherized, insurance qualified, and unobtrusive painted to match and blend in appearance.

We must start with an expeditious exterior walk around tech check.

With Hurricane Season rapidly approaching, and a just announced major El Nino warning for the summer, fall, and winter developing, plus the full-blown hurricane insurance dislocation in full happening, we are gearing up for our usual seven day a week seasonal effort. Thus, kindly try to expedite your tech check exterior site visit request.

Thus, we would appreciate you carving out 15-30 minutes time mid days soon as convenient for you.

With Hurricane Season rapidly approaching, and an expected major El Nino warning for the summer apparently pending for announcement May 21, plus the full-blown hurricane insurance dislocation in full happening, we are gearing up for our usual seven day a week seasonal effort.

Meanwhile, here is some pertinent preliminary information.

It is important to know that some hurricane insurers give 22% annual every year discount, but also some give up to 30%, depending upon particulars of your home’s foundation. We can discuss which insurer is currently providing your coverage, and we can refer you to another one who gives the biggest discounts. We are not commissioned by insurers so our referrals are meant for the clients’ money saving.

This whole time we have enjoyed gaining the most engineering expertise on this subject in the state and enjoy meeting clients and doing the quick site visit tech analysis.

And we are proud of bugging the Legislature and Governors for years about making insurers step up to the plate in Hawaii as they do in all the SE United States and Southern states; so now we Kamaaina homeowners get incentives for lowering our wind damage risks-and over time you get your retrofit investment paid back, and it continues, plus your home is well strengthened.

This work is very technically precise and virtually never done properly by unlicensed or average contractors. Nor do they know how to, or eligible to, Certify your installation is in accordance with the State and Ins Industry retrofit protocol ("code") for your hurricane insurance yearly discounts.

This structural work is not like shopping for painting or other common work. It's not easy to shop it around to unqualified opportunists. Apologies for being so candid, but we'll explain it a little herein.

But, if you do price shop it, then please do yourself a favor and get in writing what their work includes.

We've done over 7000 projects and know that for our other work it's normal to get comparative bids. But for protection of the most important possession in your life, please be cautious that whoever is proposing to save you $100 or $200 or who knows whatever, doesn't confuse it with doing new construction and most importantly don't know the difference.

If you do price shop it and they asked you how much our price is, please do not show or give them our proprietary company documents - please know that it's mandatory for your own benefit that you ask for an apples-to-apples comparison. Our actual Scope of Work proposal provides several pages of tech details (see below).

All proposals must have type of connectors, type of metallurgic weatherization rating the connectors have and will they also be additionally coated with premium 2x rust protector-plus also high-quality finish painted to make them blend in and provide a third level of rust proofing.

Please know that all customer contracts must have State required Disclosures about your Hawaii consumer protections. For this work you should also get a written promise to receive the Hurricane Ins Discount Certification that is accepted by the Insurance industry, and you should also get a one-year workmanship warranty.

In the overview, and I hope we aren't sounding too definitive, but please know that we have installed over 620,000 of the proper strength, weather resistant, blended-in, paint color matched, (and thus barely noticeable appearance) hurricane clips.

Moreover, we are Licensed for both General Contracting and General Engineering so we can provide annual insurance discount Certification to the State and Insurance Industry technical protocol "code" requirements.

I enjoy explaining this demonstrably cost-effective protection investment and bringing to clients' attention the alarming small print news in your hurricane policy that you now have to pay $12,000 to $22,000 on average deductible before getting dollar one of claim money. This nearly $600 million penalty put on our backs replaces the average $1000 deductible before Hurricane Iniki.

Please take another look at our websites, hurricaneprotect.com and/or hawaiihurricaneready.com page plus short videos, etc.

Maggie Toyama, Ofc Mgr, (808) 779 3944 and I will schedule your quick exterior walk around tech check for as soon as possible, usually around midday.  Frankly, the sooner the better you proceed with this investment  since it's already hurricane season Kore Const is doing jobs for so many clients due to the hurricane insurance crisis, this winter’s many storm scares, and before we know it, the heart of this yea’rs Super El Nino hurricane season will be upon us.

You don’t have to be there if you can unlock gates and house any watch dogs.

Site visit should only take 10-15 minutes. Our Sr. tech guru Pat Chamberlain and I will be the ones to see you then.

Thank you,
Gerry Peters

Which insurers offer the discount

Most major Hawaii hurricane insurers offer wind mitigation discounts, including First Insurance Company of Hawaii (FICOH), Island Insurance, Hawaiian Hurricane Group, DB Insurance, RLI, Allstate, and others. State Farm structures its rates differently and generally does not offer separate retrofit credits.
Discount amounts and qualification requirements vary by carrier and policy type. We can help you understand what your specific insurer offers.

What insurers require for the discount

To qualify for the wind mitigation discount, hurricane insurance carriers in Hawaii generally require:

Work performed by a Hawaii-licensed contractor (Kore Construction is licensed BC-38806)

Documentation of the specific connector types and locations installed

Confirmation that the work complies with current Hawaii building code

Photographs of the completed installation

In some cases, a Certificate of Completion or contractor's affidavit

Every Kore Construction installation coordinated through HHR includes a complete insurance documentation package by default. You forward it to your hurricane insurer to apply for the discount, which is usually applied at your next policy renewal. We're glad to help communicate with your carrier if needed — at no extra charge.

The payback math

Take your current annual hurricane premium, multiply by your insurer's wind mitigation discount percentage — that's your estimated annual savings. Divide the retrofit cost by that annual savings figure, and you have your payback period in years.
For most Oahu homeowners, the payback period works out to three to seven years.
Everything after that is permanent savings on a recurring annual cost — for as long as you own the home, and continuing as a value transfer to the next owner when you sell.

What we don't promise

We don't promise a specific discount percentage — we don't set insurance policy, the carriers do, and their programs change. We also can't promise the math works in every individual case.

Newer Oahu homes that already have most of their required clips installed need smaller retrofits and qualify for smaller discounts.
During your free home assessment, we'll give you a realistic estimate for your specific home and what range of insurance impact you can expect.

If the numbers don't make sense for your situation, we'll tell you.

HURRICANE INSURANCE TIGHTENING UP;
