Hurricane Protection and Preparedness

HPS is well known for being Hawaii's pioneer and leader in hurricane clip retrofit for homes and buildings.  We provide durable and weather tested hurricaneproducts.  All of our cables, ties, straps, and other components are made from the highest grade, double-galvanized steel available.

Hurricane clip retrofits are custom designed to improve the structural integrity of your house.  By strengthening the roof to wall, post to beam, and wall tofoundation connections, houses are proven to withstand greater wind force. We fortify such vulnerable spots as windows, garage doors and lanais. As of Photo of finished hurricane clips.2008 we offer state certified polypropylene honeycomb “plastic plywood” window panels for window protection.  These lightweight, state of the art panels are practically indestructible.  Easily deployed before a storm, they remain out of sight the rest of the time. NEW COPY 8/29 to add:  These panels weigh about ¼ to 1/5 of plywood with the strength of ¾ inch thick plywood. They have certified for the East and Gulf Coast  140 mph minimum standards. See the Windshield Panels brochure and the manufacturers link on our site. Take a look at how we install hurricane clips

IT’S NOT IF, BUT WHEN, SO WHY PROCRASTINATE?
You can do it and your insurer will help!

Only houses built in Hawaii since 1994-1997 have hurricane clips mandated by county codes, but not all have clips for V gable peaks and horizontal lookout@ beams nor for dutch gable peaks. Furthermore, NO HOUSES in Hawaii of any year were built with window and sliding door, nor double entry door, stained glass door, nor garage door protection, nor adequate garage roller wheel track hold downs. Hurricane clips and connectors have been proven throughout theClick here to read the artical.world since 1963, which is why Hawaii counties mandate them for new construction.

Insurance Discounts and Punitive Homeowners First Pay Deductibles

Annual discounts from hurricane insurers of $125 to $400 every year, including after all of your investment has been paid back are available from every hurricane insurer in Hawaii, except State Farm, which claims their rates are lower than all others.  However, there has been a major dump of first payment responsibility onto home and condo owners in the last two years. It used to be that you would pay the first $500 and your hurricane insurer would pay from that point on. Then it went to $1000-$4000 after Hurricane Iniki under the old Hawaii Hurricane  Relief Fund, and immediately thereafter.  Now, in the last two years, another $250 million or so of first pay responsibility has been piled on home and condo owners backs and deductibles are now $6,000 - $10,000----- that is of 2% of the insured value including loss of use and contents coverage....we highly recommend you check the fine print  in your hurricane insurance policies.

Most hurricane insurance companies offer substantial annual discounts in hurricane insurance premiums as an incentive for you to strengthen your house.  The discounts are available for:
1) Roof-to-wall connection (hurricane clips) (typically 10 percent off)
2) Wall-to-foundation connections (typically 10-12 percent off) (All houses on slab foundations qualify for this provided the car port and lanai free standing posts are connected with plates to the concrete)
3) Deployable storm panels/ window coverings (15-18 percent off for single-family houses and 18 percent off for condos)

Check with us as to the availability  of the discounts and the specific requirements needed to obtain them.  Each company is a little different.  Conceivably, if all three strengthening measures are performed, as much as 40 percent could be saved on your hurricane insurance premiums annually.

HPS provides Certificates of Completion of Retrofit for your hurricane insurer, and will also communicate with them by phone and email too.  This is a no extra charge service to our customers including necessary photos and contractor certifications.
